The purpose of a crown is to protect and strengthen a brittle, weakened or badly broken tooth (root canal tooth or tooth with a large filling). First, the tooth is trimmed on all sides in preparation of the crown. Then, an impression of the area is taken. This impression is then sent to the laboratory, which fabricates the permanent crown. Next, a temporary crown is cemented into place, while the permanent crown is being developed by the lab. A few weeks later, the final crown is cemented into place. Oleynik Dental uses zirconia crowns for the majority of cases. Zirconia is a biocompatible and durable material that provides a better aesthetic appearance than typical porcelain crowns.
