The purpose of a crown is to protect and strengthen a weakened tooth (root canal treated tooth or tooth with a large filling). First, the tooth is trimmed on all sides in preparation for the crown. Then, an impression of the area is taken. This impression is sent to the lab which fabricates the permanent crown. Next, a temporary crown is fabricated and cemented into place.
